3. courtship: you're old-fashioned - or from an old-fashioned society - and to pursue someone, you have to present them with a gift to make your intentions known.



4. serious: be it an engagement present or something else, you want your special someone to realize that you want to take things to the next level.



5. ownership: the present's twofold; it also shows everyone else that this person is yours.
